About Us

Who we are

We are a multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary team that has deep expertise in COPD, research, multisite trials, health system innovation, remote monitoring systems, and machine learning. Our team also includes a Patient Board comprised of older adults with COPD.

Our Vision

Remote clinical monitoring available and accessible to all Canadians with COPD that facilitates the detection and treatment of low-level inflammation to prevent exacerbations, most notably severe exacerbations leading to emergency department visits and hospitalization.

Our Mission

To co-develop, co-implement, co-evaluate, and co-scale a remote monitoring platform that benefits all Canadians with COPD, detecting low-level inflammation in COPD to treat and prevent exacerbations, most notably severe exacerbations leading to emergency department visits and hospitalization.

The CHARM-COPD platform is our current development initiative focused on improving care for people with COPD. It consists of a patient-facing app and a clinician dashboard to enable seamless remote clinical monitoring. Patients can enter a daily diary to report symptoms and vital signs such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate, as well as upload audio recordings for future speech assessment. The app also connects with Fitbit to collect health metrics such as heart rate, sleep, and activity. The clinician dashboard synthesizes this data, allowing healthcare providers to review information and detect early warning signs for timely intervention, helping prevent COPD exacerbations and reduce hospital visits so patients can stay healthier at home.
